Good For Her: Feminist Horror in Greek Tragedy

Bodies ripped apart, eyes gouged out, flesh melting off the bones? Ancient Greek tragedy is all about horror. For Adults and Grades 7-12. Registration required.

This talk explores a type of feminist horror called “Good For Her horror” (e.g., Carrie (1976) and Midsommar (2019)), and shows how Greek tragedy presents horrifying but satisfying women (Clytemnestra, Medea, and Hecuba) who undergo trauma but get their savage revenge.

Craig Jendza is an Associate Professor of Ancient Greek and Roman Studies at Denison University. His research focuses fundamental questions related to Greek drama, such as how the ancient theatrical genres of tragedy, comedy, and satyr drama relate to each other, or how comedy creates humor and tragedy creates horror. His favorite course to teach at Denison is a writing course on horror film and Greek tragedy.
